NDLSS DATABASE OF PERTH COMMUNITY LEGAL CENTRES (CLCs)
The following database was compiled to allow all law students the opportunity to access community legal centres and other legal organisation’s in an easy and time effective manner. A major objective of this database is to provide a directory for law students who are undertaking the Ethics and the Law ‘LW104’ unit. We hope that it provides an easy to use information gateway so that law students know where to find various community legal centres within the metropolitan area.
We would like to thank those community legal centres for their permission in publishing this information. Below are the names of the Community Legal Centre’s listed alphabetically.
1. Citizens Advice Bureau
CAB provides advice and information relating to most areas of law including family, civil, consumer, vehicle accidents, neighbourhood disputes, simple wills, powers of attorney and probate. Initial legal advice is given, no legal representation provided. Some Family Court documents provided. Branches are situated in Albany, Armadale, Busselton, Fremantle, Joondalup, Kwinana, Mandurah, Midland and Rockingham.

2. Gosnells Community Legal Centre Inc
Gosnells is in the southwest metropolitan area of Perth and provides information, advice and ongoing assistance in family law, Child Support, Welfare Rights, Tenancy, Consumer Credit and Domestic Violence. Representation in court is available for restraining order applications and defended hearings. Initial legal advice is available in minor criminal and civil law matters. Mediation is available in neighbourhood and family disputes. Clinical Legal Education is also available.

3. Fremantle Community Legal Centre
Fremantle CLC provides advocacy with Centrelink, Homeswest, other government bodies, financial counselling, legal advice and community legal education. There is an evening legal service provided twice weekly. Other services available include both a Restraining Order Service and Assistance with Judgement Summonses at the Fremantle Magistrates’ Court, as well as a fortnightly Family Law information session.

4. The Humanitarian Group
The Humanitarian Group is a non-for-profit organisation seeking to aid people who have arrived in Australia from disadvantaged and culturally diverse backgrounds. They are situated in Victoria Park.

5. Marninwarntikura Fitzroy Women’s Resource Centre
The Centre is a family violence prevention unit and provides legal advice and representation and community legal education for women.

6. Mental Health Law Centre
MHLC provides legal advice and representation for involuntary patients in the mental health system. They also provide referrals for other legal issues, and are active in promoting education on mental health legal issues. It is also currently providing casework services on other legal problems directly connected to mental illness. MHLC primarily focuses on areas of law including criminal, guardianship and administration criminal injuries compensation, equal opportunity, discrimination and other minor civil matters.

7. Multicultural Services Centre of WA Inc.
MSCWA provides a specialised legal service for clients mainly from non-English speaking backgrounds. The centre operates as a community legal program within a Multicultural Service. The Centre provides initial advice, minor assistance and casework on family law and civil law. Clinical Legal Education is provided to specific ethnic groups on family law, wills and domestic violence.

8. Peel Community Legal Service Inc.
This service provides Legal Advice Clinics to Mandurah and to the Peel region, with a focus on assistance for low income or disadvantaged people. Family law information sessions are held fortnightly. Community Legal Education forums are held regularly to increase public awareness of legal rights and responsibilities in areas ranging from neighbour disputes to employee rights. Hours: 9-4.30pm Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri. Closed to the public on Wednesdays.

9. Southern Communities Advocacy Legal & Education Service Inc
SCALES is a legal education clinic in partnership with Murdoch University’s School of Law, and hosts the Murdoch Student Law Clinic. A free generalist legal service is provided to disadvantaged people in Kwinana and Rockingham. Advice and limited casework is provided on Consumer disputes; Criminal Injuries Compensation; Criminal including Children’s Court matters; Domestic Violence service/court support; Equal Opportunity; Family Law Children’s Matters; Immigration; Centrelink; and Tenancy issues. Services separate to the Law Clinic include law and policy reform, community development, community legal education and Family Law Forums.

10. Sussex Street Community Law Service
Sussex Street provides a generalist legal service providing advice and assistance in civil and family law. They also have specialist services concerned with tenancy advocacy, welfare rights and financial counselling. The WA Disability Discrimination Unit is a part of Sussex Street. An NSDS Accredited disability advocacy service is also provided, as well as community legal education and law reform activities. Sussex Street is also the publisher of the WA Law handbook.

11. Welfare Rights & Advocacy Service (WA)
WRASWA provides a specialist legal advice service providing information, advice, advocacy and assistance with Centrelink, issues and appeals. They also conduct information sessions on Centrelink appeals process for clients and community organisations, as well as other community legal education and welfare reform activities. WRASWA also provides tenancy assistance two days per week.

12. Women’s Law Centre WA
The Women’s Law Centre is a specialist women’s legal service seeking to provide information, advice, minor assistance, representation, community legal education and law reform advocacy.
